The Olubeshe of Ibeshe kingdom, Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya has commended the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Lagos for the door-to-door distribution of food items to the poor, widows and elderly in rural communities across Lagos State.

The Olubeshe of Ibeshe kingdom, Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya has commended the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Lagos for the door-to-door distribution of food items to the poor, widows and elderly in rural communities across Lagos State.

Ogunsanya said the gesture, which seeks to cushion the biting effect of the lockdown order by the federal and state governments, is worthy of emulation.

Members of the association distributed rice, beans, garri, tomato pastes, vegetable oil and hand sanitisers, among other items equitably to the poor, widows and the elderly at Obalende and Ibeshe kingdom in Ikorodu yesterday.

“Taking care of 200 million people in the country is not easy. We were told to sit at home so that we will be safe from contacting coronavirus, and my people are obeying the lockdown directives of the government. The palliative is helping the people. Before the pandemic, some people don’t have up to what is inside this relief package to feed in their houses, but for our people to have this to feed during this period, it is a blessing,” the monarch told The Guardian.

The Vice Chairman, YMCA, Lagos, Adedolapo Ayeola, said the mission of the organisation is to assist government and reach out to the less privileged in communities, to cushion the effect of hunger.

Ayeola said the door-to-door distribution of the food items is to ensure social distancing is maintained to avoid community transmission of the coronavirus.

Receiving the relief package with tears in her eyes, Ogunleke Ronke, a widow and mother of three, said the food items would go a long way in sustaining her family during the lockdown period.
