Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse, also referred to as molestation, is abusive sexual behavior by one person upon another. It is often perpetrated using force or by taking advantage of another. Statistics reveal that 4 out of 10 girls have been sexually molested in one way or the other. Selina a four-year-old girl with lofty dreams was sexually molested by an unknown perpetrator. YMCA of Lagos on receiving the report took action to collaborate with NonGovernmental Organizations that specialize in child sexual
abuse cases to ensure the perpetrator is brought to book. Selina was taken to the hospital and it was confirmed that there was a forceful penetration around Selina’s private part. Upon interrogation, Selina confirmed that the
perpetrator used his finger around her private part. The government has taken custody of Selina and her Mother. Sexual abuse is now a scourge that has ravaged the society with numbers of victims constantly increasing while many of the perpetrators walk around the streets as free persons.

YMCA OF LAGOS YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME

The role of young people in the society cannot be undermined; they represent the present and the future of every nation. YMCA as a Youth centred organization is poised to empower young people in all aspects to enhance their wellbeing because they play a vital role in achieving the vision and mission of the Association. The world narrative is changing as Young people are gradually taking their space at top level roles and it is commonly said that the “Youths are the Leaders of tomorrow, but there is a paradigm shift, The Youths are the leaders of today.” Purposeful leadership is gradually becoming a thing of the past as leadership roles are seen as an avenue to empower and enrich pockets of individuals, hence, dirty politics becomes the order of the day. If the narrative will be changed, then there has to be a reorientation and a mind shift, a change of perspective towards leadership and followership, this is what the Youth Leadership Training Programme exposed participants to. The YMCA of Lagos Youth Leadership Training programme held on Friday, 26th to Sunday, 28th February, 2021 at The YMCA of Lagos Secretariat, 77 Awolowo road, Ikoyi, Lagos State. The Training had in attendance 17 youth leaders from the Youth council of YMCA of Lagos, Hi- Y club of Lagos, Y-Elite club of Lagos, Youth Leaders from YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) and Youth representatives on the Board of Management.
